Last week at a meeting, a woman came in and asked if we’d seen the rainbow on our way in.

“Yes, I did.”  I said.

“It was so beautiful that all I could do was sigh.”  She said.

“But, I think that God is only a sigh away.”  She continued.

“I’ve got to write that down.”  I said.

I’m lucky.  I am a member of a twelve-step group.  I never would have dreamed that those two things would come out of my mouth, one after another.  But, they have.  And, I am.

Lately, I’ve seen the fruit of my program in such abundance that I’ve had to sit back and bask in gratefulness.

I sometimes juxtapose the twenty-four hour news cycle or rants from one side or the other on social media against my friends in program.  It’s interesting to me that most people would pity us because we have problems.

And, while that is true, the important thing is this: we are learning to live our lives around God and deal with the only thing that we can; ourselves.

When we work on ourselves, we do it with God guiding the way.  If we are working our program, God remains at center.  When we wake up, we remind ourselves of the first three steps.  The short version of those steps remind me that ‘I can’t, God can and I’ll let Him’.

When I let Him ‘take the wheel’ as a country music song suggests, all kinds of amazing things unfold.  I witness people find their voices.  I experience families heal.  I see hope grow.  It is a stark contrast to the way that I used to feel.

At another meeting, less a week ago, another person mentioned that ‘God is in the pause.’  They were talking about not knowing what to do.  So they paused, and in that pause God supplied the answer.

Then there is the member who always reminds us that when he feels disquieted, he looks to see if he has misplaced his dependence. My friends with problems are so wise.

In my twelve-step group, I get to see God through the eyes of others.  It builds upon the vision that I already hold of Him, adding depth and color.  If he’s not at the center of your problems, I highly recommend that you invite him there.  You won’t be disappointed…
