Thank you for stopping by. My name is Jean. I am the mother to three adult children and the wife of a horse vet. But, you find me here as someone affected by the family disease of drug and alcohol addiction. I write about recovery from a Catholic perspective.

I know from our past struggles, how lonely that journey can be. This disease is one mired in fear and shame. Early on, I didn’t reach out to anyone. Then I began reading blogs written by other parents. They helped me to come out of hiding.

Then, I started attending a twelve-step program and my life began to improve. I started to focus on myself and my relationship with God instead of my addicted loved ones. I was so impressed with my twelve-step program that I started researching its history.

Since all twelve-step groups originated from Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), I decided to research the Church’s part in AA’s history. I also learned about the Jesuits (Society of Jesus) and Father Ed Dowling, who played a big part in Bill W.’s life during the formation of AA’s early history.

That led me to learn about the Jesuit’s founder, St. Ignatius of Loyola & His Spiritual Exercises. They seemed difficult early on, but with time, they became tools that I used in growing my relationship with God.

All of the information gained led me to write about our family’s experience, strength, and hope. Now, that book will be published by Loyola Press!

There are a couple of things that I’d really like for you to know. First of all, there is HOPE. Secondly, you are NOT alone.  There are so many of us out there who have been touched by this disease.

I focus on three areas of my recovery from the effects of other people. I am working very hard to recover my faith, recover myself, and to recover my family. It is a lifelong journey that I’m traveling with God as my guide. And I feel He is calling me to help guide others, too.
